About me

My name is Jake Hume, I am a film production student at the Arts Institute at Bournemouth [aka: Bournemouth Screen Acadamy].

My chosen specialism is 'producing' ... or more accurately, in production. My aim is to make great quality, fresh new films, but I don't want to be making short films for the rest of my life! Networking is also a big thing for me... However, to paraphrase from 'The Departed', too many students want to '...appear to be a filmmaker rather than be a filmmaker.' This annoys me because most of the arrogant people at student level couldn't even produce a cooked breakfast, let alone a 16mm short that could blow your mind, question your beliefs, thoughts and challenge audiences!

I have noticed, while being at the film school, that many aspiring filmmakers have really poor communication, organisational skills, initiative and most of all, common sense. I am slowly trying to change that - at least, with the crews that I work with, so that they can contribute better to the production values of my films. They are the key fundamental skills to producing a film... Before you can even move onto deal-making, finance and budgeting, the law, negotiations, tact, confidence and all the rest of the qualities which makes up a good film-maker - namely producers.

I spend a lot of time analyzing my own shortcomings, accepting criticism from others and improving my own standards for my professional practice on and off-set. Learning from others is always a great idea. Finding processes and ways to tackle problems from others and translating them to your own preferred methods is good practice.

At first, coming to these realizations when you're a kid is hard... Nobody likes to be told they are bad or that their film is bad... But the only way to improve is to absorb everything around you and have a critical eye. Thats not to say you should go round being honest and blunt to everything you see - You may not get a job that way!
