Fireface
Fireface is a burningly brilliant play about the most dysfunctional family imaginable, eminiscent of a cross between Ian McEwan’s The Cement Garden, an episode of The Young Ones and a Beckett play. Kurt is going through puberty, Olga wants sex and Mother and Father barely talk. When Paul arrives on his motorbike the fuse is lit. Growing up can be hell but Mayenburg’s play wickedly asks…what if it isn’t just a phase? A play of comedy and danger.
West Side Story
Fifty years since its opening on stage, this modern day re-telling of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is still loved the world over. The story highlights the evergrowing menace of gang warfare in 1950’s New York, where racial tensions between white Americans and Puerto Rican immigrants are rife. A powerful and thrilling tale of young love, a clash of cultures, passion and tragedy, accompanied by a breathtaking musical score. Supported by the Shirley Bassey Fund
A Small Family Business
Alan Ayckbourn’s hugely successful black political comedy was first performed at the National Theatre to rapturous reviews...With wit and insight Ayckbourn is able to point out that the slope from the permissible to the unacceptable is a slippery one.The human mind left to its own devices can usually justify any code of behaviour it chooses to suit circumstances...
Splendour
Kathryn, a photo-journalist, arrives at the home of the dictator of a European state torn apart by civil war.The dictator is not there but Kathryn and her interpreter Gilma are welcomed by the dictator’s wife and they wait for him to arrive. Snow begins to fall. The dictator does not arrive. The women talk - Toy Story 2, Prada handbags, chilli vodka...anything.The soldiers close in. Abi Morgan’s brilliant play examines the fragile veneer of our lives and the beating heart within.
Three Sisters
“It seems to me that you’ve got to believe in something, or at least look for something to believe in, or your life is empty.“ Four young people are left stranded in a provincial backwater after the death of their beloved father. Struggling to find something to believe in, they seek solace in the arms of lovers, in work, in gambling and in dreams.Three Sisters charts the siblings passage into adulthood against the backdrop of a changing Russia. - What students say:

“I came to RWCMD straight from comprehensive school knowing that all I wanted to be was an actor. I really feel that because of the vast range of training and opportunities the acting course has to offer, I have a real head start within the acting industry. The College holds a very secure atmosphere that makes you feel safe in whatever you do, and there’s always someone around who can hep you.”
Aneurin Barnard, BA (Hons) Acting
“Before coming to RWCMD I’d worked professionally as an actress on a Welsh speaking soap, Pobol Y Cwm (BBC Wales) but hadn’t had any previous training. When I left I applied for the postgraduate course in Acting for Stage, Screen and Radio. One of the main things which attracted me here was that I was able to continue using my Welsh language and knew that the opportunity wouldn’t have come elsewhere. There are 10 of us on the course, which gives the tutors the chance to work with us individually. Every aspect of the course has been useful, to ensure we get the best training possible in the short time we have at the College and believe me the time really does fly!”
Rosalind Richards - PG Dip in Acting for Stage, Screen and Radio
“Arts Management was completely new for me; my path to the course was through Drama so to be learning the ins and outs of organisations seemed pretty daunting. However from the moment I came into the College I knew it was right for me. Our lecturers are fantastic and really make sure you’re happy, they’re very easy to talk to, which helps if you are going through a rough patch. The other students on the course are so friendly and we socialise with each other a lot.
The course itself teaches you an enormous range of skills and ideas about how to approach the running of different types of Arts based organisations. What I love about the course is the amount of guest lecturers we have, and how varied all their backgrounds are. This course has definitely opened up doors I never knew existed. I would encourage anyone that wants to work within the administrative side of any kind of organisation to consider this course, because the skills you learn here are invaluable.”
Joanna Morrisey – PG Arts Management
“College has been a fantastic experience for me – I’ve learnt so much about the theatre industry and made some life long friends. When I first came to RWCMD I did not have much experience or knowledge of the theatre industry and was quite nervous that everyone else knew more than me, but the great thing about the College is that everyone starts on the same level. I’ve been on two external placements one of which was with the Welsh National Opera which has enabled me to build contacts within the company. I am currently the stage manager for the College production of West Side Story at Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre and looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead.”
Christie Gerrard – BA (Hons) Stage Management
“The reason I chose RWCMD for my Post Grad was because there's no other course like it around. I was at a stage where I knew I wanted to go into Stage Management, but didn't have enough experience to go straight into a job, but had also just come out of a four year drama degree, so another two years in College wasn't really what I was looking for! The Post Grad course at Welsh College manages to balance all the relevant teaching and practical experience, with a time scale of less than a year. Although the teaching element is a very full schedule, I really enjoyed the variety of classes we were given; from stage management to lighting design, and tour planning to events organiser.
“The element that really makes it stand out from other College’s are their links with the professional world. There is so much emphasis on your future employment, and the staff make sure they really get to know you, and so where best you'd be suited. My professional placement was at The Royal Court Theatre in London, where I am now working, so the course has gotten me to exactly where I want to be.”
Ruth Murfitt - PG Dip in Stage Management
“The course provides such a brilliant diversity in skills to all its students. The courses broad content as well as its flexibility means that each student can experience a near perfect training for their choice of career in theatre, whether in costume or set design, scenic painting, tailoring or puppetry. One of the courses and indeed the College’s forte is its community; it is truly unique in its ability to create a warm working environment. The studio becomes a second home, and with a large work load there are often times when it all gets a bit much. However I have found that during these times I have always had a great support from the people around me, my fellow students and tutors, and it is this support that makes this course so exceptional. The area in and around Cardiff provides a rich and diverse art scene as well as having a great nightlife. I have enjoyed my time here immensely.”
Molly Einchomb - BA (Hons) Theatre Design
