Andrew Schnetler

About me

Yozer,

I have recently relocated to beautiful New Zealand, and seek to get involved in production at any level. Like everyone else (well maybe not EVERYONE) I dream of directing one day.

But I know such a privilege is earned and not freely given.

My younger years consisted of remaking films from multiple genres with 4 equally insane best buds. Making our own no-budget, shot on video versions of everything from pop corn flicks like Predator and Highlander to John Woo bullet ballet shooters, paper masche Sci-Fi epics and Superhero comedies to Raimi/Romero inspired zombie gorefests (this is when we discovered the magic of latex, toilet paper and food colouring. Mum never got those whites quite right again).

I studied Video Production in college, and was exposed to the intellectual, aesthetic and ambiguously genius minds of Cronenberg, Bunel, E. Elias Merhige, Svankmajer, Brothers Quay, Robert Wiene, Fritz Lang, F.W Murnau and of course the Italian Hitchcock, Argento.

But it was David Lynch with Eraserhead that shook my soul. It was the same awakening that I felt, when as a six year old I had just watched Star Wars at the drive in.

After college I worked in numerous industries from Documentary, Wildlife, Corporate, Training, News, Sports and even frikken Weddings.......Anything to work behind, in front of, next to and sometimes on top of the camera...(don't even ask!!!). Doing what ever needs to be done to get the shot, baby.

In the latter part of the 90's, about the time when Bill Gates was supposedly psyching himself up to destroy the planet, I found work at an animation company called Coffee Machine Animation Studio. It was a "pay by trade" kinda deal. I was mentored by the great artist Nanda Soobben, in the areas of illustration, storyboard, painting and course animation. Under his wings I lectured at The Center for Fine Art, Animation and Design for 5 years. At this time I furthered myself in the study of Make-up, Special FX and Prosthetics at Face 2 Face Make-up Design School. In the midst of dental stone and intestines I met the woman who would become my wife.

I found freelance work with various film production houses, with roles ranging from script, storyboard, fx, camera, edit, and moral support.

The last few years my wife and myself, formed our own company Dark Revelation Studio. Avidly shooting short films and working in comics, for various film festivals and publications. Our ambition is to combine all forms of animation, photography, visual fx, live performance, puppetry, special fx and gigantic sound design into one cine-smorgasbord called HardGoreMation.

Rock.
